The Classic Crime is a rock band from Seattle. Their latest CD, The Silver Cord, was mastered with precision and style. The first track on the CD, "The End," is artistically the beginning of one’s journey through life. Disappointment and failure weave throughout the lyrics of the songs painfully telling a story, such as in "Just a Man": 'I’m sorry for leading you along. I’m just a man' followed later by 'Wake me up, wipe the cliché from my eyes.'
The album’s words are powerful and inspirational time and time again illustrating different lessons in each song. "The Way That You Are" empowers us to stick up for ourselves with a major theme of not settling for anything less than the best we deserve. The Classic Crime cries, 'don’t give yourself away' in this song.
The words to this album seem delicately placed, just enough so that the listener will stop and let it sink in. I found myself multiple times reversing to listen again and again letting the words engulf me. The lyrics speak the ugly truth about life and its misfortunes at times. "R&R" said it masterfully with, 'Life is thrown before your eyes, and leaves its toll on your calloused, empty soul.'
The Silver Cord changes course when the album hits "The Ascent," an upbeat and uplifting instrumental placed strategically to yield the ray of light to come. The album finishes off with words of hope, a much different theme than the first half. Ironically, the last song is called "The Beginning." The Silver Cord opened with "The End" and finished with "The Beginning," seemingly telling a story of pain and suffering until peace and life is found.
The Classic Crime is a band that does not get enough attention. This album is a mental release, a checkpoint in knowing that you are not alone in your thoughts, fears, hopes, and dreams. There is a level of comfort and confidence in this album that should not go unnoticed. I know that I noticed it, and I will be keeping my eyes wide open for this band to make big moves.
