Some bands aren't meant to be taken seriously. Some bands are. I can't figure out which of these categories Forever the Sickest Kids falls under... or wants to fall under. Take a look at the album cover. There are six guys dressed in furry suits attempting to race each other on a track. This falls under the former category. This is my mentality when I pop Underdog Alma Mater into my CD player.
No matter how many times I listen to this CD, not a single song sticks in my head. At all. This isn't a good sign of a band who should be stuck in my head. It doesn't even make sense, because I find most of the songs catchy while listenin to them. There's no reason why I shouldn't be humming along to the beat later while sitting in silence.
The first song, "Whoa Oh! (Me vs. Everyone)" is probably the catchiest song on the disc, featuring the obvious "Whoa oh!" throughout the song. "Hey Brittany!" and "She's a Lady" are also catchy instrumentally.
However, I feel that this band lacks a lot in the lyrics department. "Hey Brittany!" kicks off with 'Why are you messing with me? / Is your boy on your mind? Is your boy in your car? / Or are you alone?' I wasn't surprised to read that this was originally written in two days. The lyrics to this song are quite possibly the worst ones on the CD. One would think that they could have improved this song between the time it was originally written for the PureVolume front page feature, and the re-release on their major label album. The rest of the album is full of lyrics equally as straight forward as "Hey Brittany!" leaving no room for personal interpretation by the listener.
Obviously this band is not here to impress anyone who has already surpassed his teenage years. Their catchy music is perfect for anyone who enjoys pop, but the lyrics will leave older listeners longing for something more creative and open to interpretation. With another album or two, and some growing up, this band could easily improve the lyrics to be just as catchy as the music -- and attract a wider audience.
